Why?
For the eight years of George Bush's presidency I have heard an unconscionable stream of derogatory statements about Republicans, Christians, and the President himself. These have come from Democratic coworkers, friends, and much of the media.
In a phone call with my father after the election, I gleefully stated how I was looking forward to lambasting Barack Obama for every misstep and misfortune of the U.S. in the next four years. Ah, sweet, sweet revenge!
My father kindly reminded me that leaders are given their stewardship by God, and that my attitude would not be biblical. A little ashamed, I considered how I needed to change my perspective. I wanted to create something that would continually remind me, and perhaps others, of God’s admonishments to respect our rulers. These products are part of that effort.
UPDATE: Now that the inauguration has past, it's important to focus less on who we voted for and more on the current president. To that end, some of the products have been updated accordingly to provide you with more options.
OK, so what are you selling?
We created an online store where you can buy bumper stickers, buttons, magnets, mugs, t-shirts, or whatever will help you (and me) keep a positive focus about this issue over the next four years.
> Visit the store to check out our "Praying for Barack" products.
There are even some items (stickers, buttons, and magnets) available in bulk packs. We encourage you to share these with your fellow Christians, to come together to support our president and his entire leadership team.
Where does the money go?
Bill Maher says that Christians like Mother Theresa are an "aberration", and that most Christians are hateful thugs. (He really ought to get out more, but I digress.) We work with a Christian family in Nicaragua that has started a school for children who live in the Managua city dump (Open Hearts Ministry). Mountains of trash surround a tidy, well kept haven of learning.
My father was so inspired by this, that he joined with several other individuals to build a small facility called Campo Alegría (translation: Camp of Good Cheer) on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. Here children from poor villages get to enjoy free week long camping trips. Our family is planning a mission trip to Nicaragua in the summer of 2009, and we will joyfully donate any profits from the sale of our Praying for Barack Obama products to one of these two projects.
